あなたの国では礼儀正しいことは重要ですか？イギリス英語を話すときと母国語を話すとき、どちらが礼儀正しいと思いますか？イギリス英語を耳にしたとき、最初に気づくのは「please」と「thank you」が繰り返し使われていることだと思います。そのため、イギリス英語は非常に礼儀正しい言語であり、イギリス人は礼儀正しいと思われることがあるようです。しかし、2つの点で必ずしもそうではありません。まず第一に、イングランド、北アイルランド、スコットランド、ウェールズのグレートブリテン4カ国は、地元では礼儀正しいこと以上のことで知られています。実際、これらの国に住む人たちはそれぞれ、感情的に控えめで、「Stiff upper lip」を持ち、何百種類ものジャガイモを区別できるほど食べ、できるだけお金を使わず、熱心で大声で自然体で歌うことで知られています。第二に、イギリス英語をナチュラルに話す人たちは、『プリーズ』や『サンキュー』と言ったからといって、必ずしも礼儀正しいとは限らないということです。ある種のフレーズや表現は、この2つの言葉よりもはるかに礼儀正しさのレベルを高めることができます。そして時には、「Please」や「Thank you」が失礼になることさえあるのです！
