自然なイギリス英語を話そう！②

英語を話す日本人の生徒さんから、もっと長い文章を話せるようになって、英会話のスキルを向上させたい！という声をよく聞きます。スピーキングを上達させるにはこのようなアプローチはとても有効ですが、時に会話では短い簡潔な答えの方がより効果的・自然なこともあるのです。

パート①ではキャッチボールのようなやりとりをする英会話の難しさ、に簡単に触れました。

A good conversation is like a game of catch

パート②では英会話でよく使われる短い定型の表現をもう少し見てみましょう。ここではさらに難易度を上げて、ユーモアを取り入れた皮肉的な言葉の使い方を理解してみましょう。 皮肉的な言葉の使用は世界共通ですが、イギリス人の皮肉はその独特さでよく知られています：無表情な顔で言う何気ないユーモア。

皆さん、このような表現はご存知ですか？

  • Never mind.
  • Is that so?!
  • I’m afraid so.
  • Great.
  • Good for him!

下の５つの文章に正しい回答を当てはめてみましょう。

どれが皮肉的な意味で使われているかわかりますか？

  1. He’s recently been promoted.
  2. Sorry, I forgot to bring the book you lent me.
  3. Our company has recently announced a radical permanent change in working practices: 2 days per week of working from home will now be permitted.
  4. Take your umbrella. It’s just started raining.
  5. Will the meeting only be conducted in English – no Japanese interpreter this time?

正解は以下の通りです：

  • He’s recently been promoted.

Good for him! He deserves it.

Good for him! –  is used when congratulating somebody about a perceived positive change in their life. (Good for you, her, them are all also possible, depending on the context.)

  • Sorry, I forgot to bring the book you lent me.

Never mind. Next time.

Never mind– is similar to not to worry.

  • Our company has recently announced a radical permanent change in working practices: 2 days per week of working from home will now be permitted.

Is that so?! Quite a change.

Is that so?! –  is used to show genuine surprise upon hearing new infromation.

  • Take your umbrella. It’s just started raining

Great. Just when I’m about to go out.

Great – this is the ironic example. （皮肉な使い方の例です）Here, the communicative intent is to express the opposite meaning of what the word actually means, i.e. NOT great.

  • Will the meeting only be conducted in English – no Japanese interpreter this time?

I’m afraid so. We couldn’t justify the cost for another interpreter for this meeting.

I’m afraid so – is a very useful alternative to “yes”, when you wish to soften the response. It is like saying “unforfotuanetly, it is true / correct for which you are seeking confirmation.”
