I suppose the simplest thing to say is that the system is not so radically different from yours.

We both have an unelected head of state – the emperor, in our case; the monarch, in your case.　

– 私たちの場合は天皇、あなたがたの場合は君主という、選挙で選ばれたわけではない国家元首がいます。

Our current ruling party is called the Liberal Democratic Party – or LDP for short – which is something like your Conservative Party.

– 現在の与党は、自由民主党、略して自民党と呼ばれるもので、皆さんの保守党のようなものです。

I should add that it’s actually a coalition government with a smaller conservative party. (conservative with a small ‘c’)*

The largest opposition party is called the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan – or CDP – like your Liberal Democratic Party.

I guess two key differences are that we have a written constitution and that we elect representatives to our upper chamber, like your House of Lords.

I think the pendulum has swung fairly regularly in recent decades between the Conservatives and Labour in this country. This is not the case in Japan. The LDP has dominated for many decades.

– この国では、ここ数十年、保守党と労働党の間で、かなり規則的に振り子が振れていると思います。しかし、日本ではそうではありません。自民党が何十年も支配してきたのです。

Many Japanese see the opposition as weak, with few inspiring politicians.

– 多くの日本人は、野党は弱く、刺激的な政治家は少ないと見ている。

The opposition had a short stint in government, as a coalition, from around 2009, but it didn’t last long.

– 野党は2009年頃から連立政権として短期間政権を担ったことがあるが、長くは続かなかった。

Perhaps the timing was unfortunate. Their time in office coincided with the Fukushima disaster, and many criticised the government’s handling of it.

– このタイミングは不幸中の幸いだったのかもしれない。彼らの任期は福島原発事故と重なり、政府の対応を批判する声が多く聞かれました。

I think Japanese people’s attitude towards politics in general is not so different to here.

日本人の政治に対する考え方は、こちらとあまり変わらないと思います。

Japanese often feel that politicians are out of touch with reality; that they don’t speak for ordinary people. I’ve heard that sentiment here too.

– 日本人はよく、政治家は現実からかけ離れている、庶民の代弁者ではない、と感じる。こちらでも、そのような声を聞くことがある。

This is especially true for young people. They are much less interested in politics, which is a worry. Maybe Brexit – and the future of the UK – got more youngsters engaged. That can only be a good thing.

– 特に若い人たちはそうです。彼らは政治への関心がかなり低くなっており、心配です。Brexit – そして英国の未来 – は、より多くの若者を引き込んだのかもしれません。それは良いことでしかないでしょう。

I think that the issues of the day are at the forefront of people’s minds when they vote – the cost of living, security issues and suchlike.

Perhaps the key difference is the long-standing concerns of Japanese. I think that in the UK people consistently consider the state of hospitals and schools as key voting priorities. In Japan, we probably think these aspects of life are running fairly well. We worry more about economic growth and the future state of our pensions.
