Q. What is your connection with Japan and teaching Japanese people?
A. My first Japanese student ever arrived at my home for a 3 week homestay with lessons, accompanied by her 4 -year-old son, halfway through my youngest daughter’s christening party which we were holding in our back garden. She had a great time and so did I! Later I taught Japanese people when I lived in Sri Lanka and then continued some years later in Canada. Coming back to London it seemed a natural choice to continue. 5 years ago I went to Japan for 5 weeks with some friends who had lived there 25 years ago and we went all over and even visited the priest who married us in the UK but who has retired to Wakayama. Last year we were back for another 5 weeks and travelled from Hokkaido to Okinawa and most points in between, meeting up with former students in their home towns and even some on their holidays. They enjoyed introducing me to delicious foods and enjoyed even more introducing me to rather less attractive food to the British pallet…cod’s testicles spring to mind….
